UK Rock Challenge

Causeway students took part in UK Rock Challenge for the third year in a row. Rock Challenge is a global performing arts event where schools create an 8 minute dance-drama performance on a theme of their choice.

This year, Causeway’s theme 'In a World Full of Chaos', touched upon various issues surrounding our world such as, terrorism, deforestation, and homelessness.

'We live on such a beautiful planet, but in such an ugly world. Unaware, we, the human race, continue to engage in destructive behaviours, products, and politics that cause suffering and pain to ourselves and to our planet. Our message is hope, and that hope lies in our humanity.`

A whopping 61 students were involved in this years event. Students arrived to school bright and early, excited for the day ahead. We travelled by coach to The Hawth Theatre in Crawley to be greeted by the Rock Challenge team. The event was slightly different to previous years, we had Junior Rock Challenge taking place alongside the senior Rock Challenge. As soon as all schools performed their technical rehearsal, it was time for liaison teachers to pick a number out of a hat to determine the order of the evening performance! Miss Da Silva drew the number 4, which meant Causeway would perform 1st and open the Senior Rock Challenge!

To end the afternoon production meeting, all staff were instructed to go on stage and deliver their best dance moves for the staff dance off. It was all hands on deck back stage with the 'stage crew' and Mr Grinham prepping the scenery ensuring it looked its best ready for the show. Meanwhile, Miss Da Silva, Miss Netchepir and Mrs Milnes were busy painting faces, pinning space buns and glittering everyone up ready for the performance.

The students went on stage and delivered a phenomenal performance. All the months of hard work came to fruition as they wowed the crowd. The judges comments were very positive, they praised our soundtrack and how our theme was extremely relevant to the world we live in at the moment. Causeway came away with six awards including:

  • Sussex Police Award of Excellence for Soundtrack
  • West Sussex County Council Award of Excellence for Visual Enhancement
  • Be your Best Award for Positive Inclusion
  • West Sussex County Council Award of Excellence for Entertainment
  • Rock Challenge Award for Achievement in Drug Awareness
  • Sussex Police Award of Excellence for Video Performance.

A huge well done to our dancers, stage crew, co-host, video director’s assistant and lighting assistant. You did Causeway proud!
